minneapolis who wrote an opinion piece, an op ed in "the new york times," and a protection racket where people are controlled by organized criminals, corrupt politicians. when you hear the head of the nra today say that gun laws are not the answer it really is arming people, arming somebody in that school that could have saved lives, what is your response? >> well, we -- of course, should focus on mental health issues. we should have fewer violent movies and video games and have better security in our schools, but nothing is going to change the fact that the last thing those children saw if they looked up, and i hope they didn't, is the end of a weapon manufactured by his financial backers. lapierre says if one of those teachers had a weapon they could have killed the gunman and could have saved lives and that was the potential outcome had there been someone armed in that school. >> we could always speculate about potential outcomes, but to have more weapons in the schools, particularly in the hands of people other than trained law enforcement, i think, is a very dangerous thing. the point i m

of new york, why do you care about this stuff? >> why is the murder rate around the country? i'm an american. what's your question? >> why is this mike bloomberg's crusade? >> i live in america! and i'm a human being. i don't know what your religion teaches you. mine teaches you to take care of each other. in america read the constitution. we're all equal and we're all americans. >> bill: bloomberg says basicically, get out of here asking me a question like that. he points out, you know, he has been very critical of president obama saying look, it is up to the president to lead on this with a specific proposal so that he will put forward and fight for. he promised to do that in tucson. >> the president spoke out on gun violence after the mass shooting in tucson two years ago. since those shootings happened, more than 24,100 americans have been murdered with guns. >> bill: and we've done nothing about it which gets to the question -- that's the question. is the president showing enough leadership on this i

they canceled their plans to meet for a holiday celebration in new york city, every single one of them came home instead. >> we've all been such good friends such a long time. we all grew up here. and it's so close-knit, this community. everyone kind of has each other's backs and does whatever it can to help each other out. >> we will be leaving newtown to give this small town its streets back. for the residents here to grieve and share together. but we're not going to stop covering this or talking about it in honor of those who died to make those in power take action to stop anything like this from happening again. "piers morgan starts now." >>> tonight, two more funerals, two more impossibly small coffins what will america do to stop a madman. >> i am a supporter of the second amendment. but i believe it's time for us to move a different direction. >> and the congresswoman who lost her husband in the long island railroad shooting. >>> also, i'll go one-on-one with a gun advocate who said that lawmakers who vote for gun control have blood on their hands. could he be serious? >

the "new york times," this is what they write where they stand in their progress right now. and there is a disagreement about stimulus funding and whether or not that is included in some overall deal. we will talk more about this from a democrat from pennsylvania coming up here on the "washington journal" later on the program. but i want to stick to our topic here this morning. role of federal state governments and mental health. we'll go to an independent caller from pennsylvania. caller, what's your name? caller: hello? host: hi. what's your name, caller? caller: yes. the role of the government in mental health, i believe, should be stepped up and i think it's directly related to the health care industry in particular. the obama care or whatever type of health program is needed because as someone said earlier, most people do not have enough financial weather withtoll be able to assist people that they know maybe in their family or in their neighbors or the communities to help them. and i'm amazed how when we hear about an event like this, people are amazed that so much vi

. thanks. >> absolutely. thank you. >> bill: thanks rob. mim, up instony brook, new york. >> i have an awkward question. the mother, all of the ammunition he got came from her. >> bill: legally-purchased by her. i mean i know. it is awkward. everybody. a lot of people have been asking: what the hell was she doing with all of these guns in her house with a mentally unstable son? >> took her boys to the shooting range when she went. >> bill: yeah. >> her pervasive is gun culture when it's the mother. i'm sorry. this sounds kind of sexist but i mean we don't normally think of a mother as someone. i mean when my kids were little i was awful. i wouldn't even let them have a toy gun >> bill: neither did we. >> it made them very angry. but i mean here is a mother. she's divorced. it's true. she is fragile. it's true. but it seems and everybody knew about it. >> yeah. yeah. she bragged about it. what i heard, she would go to the bar two or three nights a week and talked about her gun collection. >> begun enthusiast. her landscaper showed classic guns

in this town, sort of the sleepy new england town, about an hour north of new york city. >> about 60 miles or so, not far away from new york city as well, much closer to danbury, connecticut. david, hold on for a moment. mary snow is in newtown as well, outside the suspect's home, what are you seeing over there, mary? >> we're being kept far back from the suspect's home. the police have cordoned off this area. there are multiple law enforcement vehicles lined up and residents, wolf, are being kept away from their homes as well and looking at a car, a line of vehicles lined up of residents who are told they cannot go to their homes because police tape has been put up. and there are more than a dozen law enforcement vehicles here. >> the suspect, mary, now deceased, died at the scene, we don't know the circumstances surrounding that, ryan lanza, in his 20s. are you getting any information at all if he had a direct connection to the sandy hook elementary school, where this mass killing took place? >> not as yet. and i have to tell you, wolf, we approached some of the residents here. they're s

for us. in the spring we experienced late freezes in michigan and new york and pennsylvania that wiped out fruit crops. a lot of small family farms, farms in northern michigan wiped out. in my home state late freezes in the spring caused cherry producers to lose practically their entire crop right off the bat. it warmed up, the buds came out, then they had a deep freeze; killed everything. our growers produce 75% of the u.s. supply of cherries. that's around 270 million pounds. and the cherry producers experienced 98% loss. now in our amendment, in the disaster bill and in the farm bill, we give them some help because they spent the rest of the crop year this year having to pay to maintain the orchards and the frees, eating the costs and hoping the trees will bounce back next year and produce a crop. so they have all the costs of maintaining everything but no revenue coming in. cherry producers were also forced to fight spreading diseases like cherry leaf spot and bacterial tinker, making the trees even more costly to maintain and at risk of loss. they didn't just lose their crop this

have enough. buffalo and new york have about a foot. fulton is the winner and loser. here are the airport delays. lauderdale is construction. jfk and la guardia and newark is slowing down because of the snow and wind. you have so many planes trying to get in one place. you have to separate them when the wind is coming in and the airlines don't like to worry and the airplanes don't like to get close to each other because of the snow and the wind. there you go. it will be a slow day today. people trying to get home and pack something to read. >> i know. it's a cliche. pack your patience. it's true. >> thank you. appreciate it. >> hard to believe it has been almost two weeks. the out pouring for a grieving community hasn't stopped since a gunman killed 20 children and seven adults in a newtown town. now they are asking people to stop giving the the overflow has been heart warming, but they are overwhelmed by the volume. they are asking to donate items to those in need in other communities. >> about 200 teachers are in class learning how to handle firearms. it's part of a plan

capacity clips. new york city mayor michael bloomberg, who has been an outspoken gun control advocate, will make an announcement on gun violence in just a couple of hours. he's calling on the president to take the lead. >> we've got to really question whether military style weapons with big magazines belongs on the streets of america in this day and age. nobody questions the second amendment's right to bear arms but i don't think the founding fathers had the idea that every man, woman and child could carry an assault weapon, and i think the president, through his leadership, could get a bill like that through congress. but at least he's got to try. >> let's bring in dan gross, president of the brady campaign to prevent gun violence. dan, thanks so much for being with us. as you know, this tragedy has struck so deeply at the hearts of americans but at the same time, the nra is not going to go away so let me ask you a strategic question. how do you maximize your chances of getting some meaningful legislation passed in congress? >> i think it comes down to a simple formula which is make

. folks in ohio and pennsylvania and western new york facing winter storm warnings. this after a storm ripped across the central part of the country. we have mike towbin at chicago o'hare. mike, good morning. reporter: you know, if you are getting on your plane at jfk at lax and you are not delayed by the chicago o'hare ripple effect, you can thank the guy who built lake michigan but next to chicago. as we look at the board, no red color. there are some flight cancellations out of o'hare, but they are due to a myriad of reasons, mechanical problems, bad weather, and icy roads where the planes have to win. big crowds right now, but that is because there are so many people. some 200,000 people are going over the holidays. going through chicago o'hare alone. he will have crowds for a visa to get to the airport early. busiest travel day of the year. but it looks like you're going home to see grandma from airborne to make it. bill: some people are criticizing cancellations because some snow did not hit in certain areas. what's going on? reporter: wisconsin, in particular, they got some 20 i

, a video security camera in new york where a guy walks off the subway takes three steps turns around pulls a gun out shoots a guy in the stomach. i don't know whether he lived or died. it was over a sporting argument, and that wasn't even a one day story. it was one of the most at sounding things i'd ever seen, so it's not just the gut-wrenching tragedy that we saw at newtown. we have to keep speaking out. it's every time the insanity interrupts our lives and ends lives, and so i'm going to keep talking. i'm -- the people in kentucky, again, every other member of the delegation in kentucky, you mentioned senator mcconnell. every other member of the federal delegation has an a rating from the n.r.a. it's very rare they hear anything different than that. it's incumbent on me as the only person who favors gun regulation in the state of kentucky to speak out to others here the other side of the story and i'm going to keep doing that. >> cenk: so that would appear to be somewhat of a politically courageous move in kentucky. you're in a more progressive district, but it is kentucky. we hear from

don't have to travel, they are making the best of it, enjoying the snow. brandi hitt, abc news, new york. >>> we are keeping an eye on flight delays here. a of our airports show no delays this morning -- a check of our airports show no delays this morning. that could change as the morning goes on if you are heading to the airport check flight tracker on abc7news.com. >>> we usually get an update in the 6:00 hour mike will be checking on that. right now the latest on our weather. >>> possibility clouds while they don't have rain falling from them, could reduce visibility enough to have flight arrival delays into sfo, in about 25 minutes from now we'll know for sure. last three hours live doppler 7 hd, lack of radar returns with the cloud cover out there breezy at times especially around sfo, gusting up to 22, winds gusting to 29 half moon bay, 26 novato keeping atmosphere overturned that's why the temperatures are mild. low to upper 40s, through 7:00, increasing sunshine, high pressure takes over today and it will be dry for one day with temperatures in the 50s this afternoon, then w

, a state like new york or california has a lot more poor people. and it also has a lot of rich people. it doesn't get the same break. i think you get 60% or over 60% reimbursement from the feds. you get 50%. you get -- i think it's you. get 60%. i can't remember everybody's numbers. i tried to educate myself. and in new york, we only get 50%. it makes a big difference. pam moynihan who always tried to change those formulas, ended up sake it's all james madison's fault. >> and we appreciate -- >> i think there are a couple of things that are terribly, terribly important and don't contradict anything that you all said. but we don't have a very good way of measuring the adequacy of our infrastructure. we know that the chinese spend eight times as high of percentage of their g.d.p. in infrastructure as we do in this country. and we know that that's got to make us less competitive. and i think i learned from the people at the chamber here that the cost of moving goods in the united states is greater in absolute dollars than it is in europe or in asia. and i don't know personally how you gr

's other funeral for jack pinto, also six years old. a big fan of the new york giants. the giants receiver, victor cruz, tweeted a photo of jack's name, calling him my hero. his one of countless tributes to the innocent victims of friday's attack. rick leventhal is live in sandy hook. what do we know about the two shooting victims who survived? >> initially the reports were there was only one gunshot victim who survived. in fact, there were two women who were both hit in their lower extremities, both were hospitalized and both have now been sent home. police are not reloosing their identities, but do plan to talk to them as soon as they're well enough to answer questions about the events. also today, as you mentioned, the very long and difficult process of funerals and burials began with two six-year-old boys being eulogized and laid to rest. jack pinto remembered as a giants fans with energy and steely determination. and noah pozner, whose twin sister and eight-year-old sister also attended sandy hook. the girls survived, but their brother did not. >> he was celebrated as a pure, innocent

comparable area, new york to london, fax county to oxford, any comparable count, the united states with any comparable county, in europe or most parts of asia, you will find a tremendous difference between gun crimes and those gun crimes are not only associated with massive and unrestricted gun ownership but are caused by -- take another country, for example, israel, where obviously people need to have guns, there's terrorism. and there's almost no gun crime at all. in order to get a gun in israel, you have to have a 60-day waiting period. you have to take a mental health exam. you got to go to shooting ranges and pass a test. you can only get 50 bullets and that's a lifetime supply. there are enormous restrictions in that country that obviously needs a law. it's cultural, it's that part of the culture is caring more about winning over our children than -- >> what i find extraordinary is the callousness of politicians in america. i don't understand why some of them aren't prepared to literally stick their necks out and say, i've had enough of this. there are so few of them prepared to take

on september 8, 2001 new york sacramento, california. -- in sacramento, california. >> my name is paul mauser, i'm the father of paul maus -- of daniel mauser who was killed in the massacre at columbine high school. >> my name is paul wilson. my beautiful wife christy lyn wilson, 26 years, was cowardly shot and killed in california, onth 12, 2011. -- october 12, 2011. >> i'm andre, i am father of bear. my son miraculously survived the shooting, he was in the line of fire. i am here not to represent the entire town, i am here just on my own accord. >> obviously the town that andre is talking about is newtown, connecticut. before we begin, is there anybody else here who has a story they want to share? i also come to this issue through personal experience. my younger brother was shot in a shooting that happened on the observation deck of the empire state building and i have some prepared remarks here but before i begin them, i just want to point out today there will be 32 more families that know the pain and horror that you just heard here today. we pay a lot of attention, and appropriately so,

know, there was a graph in the "new york times" today that showed it. they're the same the categories, right? there's a little bit of tweaks here and there and a few differences, but, you know, we're right there. on the revenue side there's a difference in terms of them wanting to preserve tax breaks for folks between 250 and a million that we just can't aafford. keep in mind, i'm in that income category. i'd love to, you know, not pay as much in taxes, but i also think it's the right thing to do for us to make sure that people who have less, people who are working and striving, people who, you know, are hoping for their kids that they have opportunity. that's what we campaigned about. that's what we talked about. this is not a situation where i i'm, you know, unwilling to compromise. this is not a situation where i'm trying to, you know, rub their face in anything. i mean, i think anybody who looks at this objectively would say that coming off my election i have met them at least halfway in order to get something done for the country. and so i notice that there were a couple of headl
